In the video, you will hear about Yrjö Kukkapuro’s career told by the designer himself. You also get to peek into the studio building Yrjö Kukkapuro designed together with engineer Eero Paloheimo. In the spirit of the 1960s, the Kukkapuros sought to find an old barn or industrial hall in which to set up their workshop and home. When no such property could be found, they decided to build one in Kauniainen on a plot of land owned by Irmeli Kukkapuro’s father.
Yrjö Kukkapuro (1933–2025) was an influential pioneer of Finnish design. His colourful, imaginative and experimental oeuvre was on view at EMMA from 1 March 2023 to 28 January 2024. Yrjö Kukkapuro – Magic Room was an exhibition marking the occasion of the designer’s 90th birthday, presenting his iconic designs alongside his greatest long-term source of inspiration – art.
