About EMMA Zone

EMMA Zone Always open for art

EMMA Zone is the new digital home of content about EMMA – Espoo Museum of Modern Art. It is a platform linked to our website where you can find regularly updated articles, videos, interviews and podcasts offering fresh perspectives on art and a new kind of online museum experience that you can enjoy from the comfort of your home.

EMMA is a forward-looking museum that embraces bold experimentation. We believe in art’s power to make a difference, and we are continually looking for novel ways to share art and design. EMMA Zone marks a new step for us in the digital arena. The service was born from our desire to offer a wider segment of art lovers and interested audiences a channel for delving deeper into our current exhibitions, projects and topical discourse about art and design. EMMA Zone not only offers a wholly new type of art experience, but also serves as a material bank about our exhibitions that you can visit anytime from anywhere in the world.

The concept of the platform was designed and produced by EMMA’s in-house experts in collaboration with our audiences and partners. Inspired by zine culture, the visual identity of the site was created by BOND Design Agency. Zines are small-circulation, self-published magazines that were originally made by cutting, pasting and photocopying, but nowadays zine-makers also use desktop publishing, software and printing presses. Zines are distinctive in how they present the author’s creative vision in a unique, visual way. EMMA Zone is a digital reintrepretation of this historically significant, analogue medium. The use of blur is a nod to an aesthetic born out of photocopying, whereas the choice of typographty emulates handwritten, individually made zines.

The idea of dividing the content into four zones came from EMMA’s test audience and personnel. The project was led by Heljä Franssila, who completed her MBA thesis on the service design process. The four zones conceived during conceptualization and testing are: Thinking Zone, Behind the Scenes at EMMA, Bubbling Under and Children’s Art Questions. Each zone offers a varied package of regularly refreshed content about EMMA for you to listen to, watch, read and experience – free of charge. Follow EMMA’s channels and be among the first to find about new content released on EMMA Zone.
